My Favourite Songs of All Time [1]
This is a list of twenty songs that have affected me deeply. In no particular order. ♡
One – The Cause by Tommie Lefroy – “Could've been a poet in a hotel lobby / I'm just sleeping with your college degree / Wouldn't call you "lover" 'cause it's loaded / I had more to say, but you were louder than me / Hopeless wordsmith, I wanted something honest / And you spoke with conviction, I started singing along / But I was always smaller than the cause.”
Two – If Only for Tonight by Vacation Manor – “I want to drive far away with you / I know that it's nothing new, but we feel it every time / For all my life I felt like my hands were tied / I'm dying to feel alive if only for tonight / Each time we pass the District line / And make our way along the interstate / I feel the pressure start to fade / The sun goes down, we hear the sound / Of Springsteen singing "we were born to run" / Well baby, we're still young / This won't be the last time I'll be here / I know that I can't outrun the fear.”
Three – Stick Season by Noah Kahan – “And I love Vermont, but it's the season of the sticks and I / Saw your mom she forgot that I existed and / It's half my fault, but I just like to play the victim / I'll drink alcohol 'til my friends come home for Christmas / And I'll dream each night of some version of you / That I might not have, but I did not lose.”
Four – Anti-Hero by Taylor Swift – “I have this thing where I get older but just never wiser / Midnights become my afternoons / When my depression works the graveyard shift / All of the people I've ghosted stand there in the room. / I should not be left to my own devices / They come with prices and vices / I end up in crisis (tale as old as time) / I wake up screaming from dreaming / One day I'll watch as you're leaving / 'Cause you got tired of my scheming… Did you hear my covert narcissism I disguise as altruism / Like some kind of congressman? (Tale as old as time) / I wake up screaming from dreaming / One day I'll watch as you're leaving / And life will lose all its meaning.”
Five – Surface Tension by Genevieve Stokes – “It's always easy the first way around / I told you I'd never let you down / You don't remember when it hurts / I told you somehow we'll make it work / But it's all on the surface, it don't hurt anymore / It's all on the surface, it don't hurt anymore / It's all on the surface, it don't hurt anymore / Hurt anymore / It's all on the surface, it don't hurt anymore / I've been talking to you, skipping rocks by the shore / Am I the perfect picture that you wanted before? / I'm not quite sure / I'm treading muddy waters / I am not what you wanted / I've been through this before (Before) / I'm treading muddy waters / I am not what you wanted / I've been through this before (Before).”
Six – Waiting Room by Phoebe Bridgers – “If you were a teacher, I would fail your class / Take it over and over 'til you noticed me / If you were a waiting room, I would never see a doctor / I would sit there with my first aid kit and bleed / I wanna be the power ballad that lifts you up and holds you down / I wanna be the broken love song that feeds your misery / And I can wish all that I want, but it won't bring us together / Plus I know whatever happens to me, I know it's for the better.”
Seven – Cosmic Love by Florence + the Machine – “The stars, the moon / They have all been blown out / You've left me in the dark / No dawn, no day / I'm always in this twilight / In the shadow of your heart / I took the stars from my eyes and then I made a map / And knew that somehow I could find my way back / Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too / So I stayed in the darkness with you.”
Eight – Counting Houses by Luz – “When the leaves start to fall in the autumn / All that we sought will start to unfold / We can move to the sea like we wanted, out of the forest into a home / With pillow cases in shades that you're fond of / Tiles in the hallway made out of gold / Eventually we'll have a place and well insulated, so / Into the city as we walked out the door / Removed your jacket and the silence you wore / That's all I ever asked you for, oh, no / Counting houses on the street where we lay / Devoid of color and too neatly arranged.”
Nine – Hold it all Together by CHPTRS – “Fast forward thinking / Would you rewind and let us in / I'll be ready where the pieces fall tonight / If they fall again / Look around here, slow down / We'll miss a page if we run about / I'll be ready where the pieces fall tonight / If they fall again / It's an honor to wade here / Thrown out in the wreckage / Didn't want this / In my circling in paces / You gathered all the wreckage / And you made this / Safe and sound / Something about you / Stands out / There's something about you.”
Ten – 1984 (Native) by NIGHT TRAVELER – “It's a California sleepless night / In a trailer laid below in lights / Babe, I'm trying to get to you / I'm almost home / I'm traveling while the city sleeps / Just the radio talking to me / Babe, I'm trying to get to you / I'm almost home / I got a fire in my veins tonight / Put on a record / Let's get lost in time / My blood is running with you, all my love / Put on a record / Put on a record tonight / I see you coming down the trail / With hair too long for the summertime / Looking just like you did / When I first saw you.”
Eleven – Sunset by The Midnight – “Faked our deaths, lit a match / Closed the door, waited for the flash / Greyhound Station, we paid in cash / Miss Lazarus, we're coming back / They say it's darkest before the dawn / We've been in this town for far too long / They say it's darkest before the dawn / We're moving on, we're moving on, we're moving on / Sunset, no regrets / First chance, last dance, stuck in the middle / Even bad girls know good love / You taste so sweet it hurts a little / Make our home, where we stand / One suitcase and half a plan / Follow the wolves and sing along / Past the voices to the song.”
Twelve – Oceans & Engines by NIKI – “We're lying on my bed with five hours to go / Fingers entwined and so were our minds / Cryin', "I don't want you to go" / You wiped away your tears / But not fears under the still and clear indigo / You said, "Baby, don't cry, we'll be fine / You're the one thing I swear I can't outgrow" / My mother said the younger me was a pretending prodigy / Well, nothing then, much has changed / 'Cause while you're wolfin' down liquor / My soul, it gets sicker / But I'm stickin' to the screenplay / Gotta say I'm okay, but answer this, babe.”
Thirteen – September by James Arthur – “I remember when I met you, just before September / You were dancing in the street, rocking that pink and leather / Begged my friend for your number, I bet you don't remember / That's how we began / I pursued you for a year, I would have waited longer / I knew ultimately it would make the feeling stronger / That first time I kissed you, I could look in the mirror / And like who I was (I liked who I was) / I could never wait for the weekends when you would come over / 'Cause that's when I'd see you again / You're all my strength and my weakness / You battle my demons / You're still undefeated.”
Fourteen – Champion by Elina – “Late nights on your pillow / Love as fast as light / Fading in to echoes / In my ventricles / I carry this cargo / Sinking deeper down / And though your love was shallow / I managed to drown / Is this how you're gonna make me look now? / Is this how you're gonna walk right out? / Then you'd better do it like a champion / And break my heart once and for all / Do you feel good knowing that you've won now? / Do you get high when I hit my lows? / Yeah I hope you feel like you're a champion / When you break my heart once and for all.”
Fifteen – The Scientist by Coldplay – “Tell me your secrets and ask me your questions / Oh, let's go back to the start / Running in circles, coming up tails / Heads on a science apart / Nobody said it was easy / It's such a shame for us to part / Nobody said it was easy / No one ever said it would be this hard / Oh, take me back to the start / I was just guessing at numbers and figures / Pulling the puzzles apart / Questions of science, science and progress / Do not speak as loud as my heart / But tell me you love me, come back and haunt me / Oh and I rush to the start.”
Sixteen – Colors by Gryffin, Blanke, Eyelar – “You and I on the 405, driving in the night / We're closer to the blue horizon / Did I die? Because you're heaven-like, I'm in all the light / Your heart can radiate and / When I close my eyes / I see a purple sky / Between your lips and mine / We slow down time / You make me see who I am / When I discover your colors / And we could be free again / We see each other colors, colors / I see your colors.”
Seventeen – Men on the Moon by Chelsea Cutler – “It's only war if there's a winner / (Ooh-ooh) It's only hell if there's a sinner / (Ooh-ooh) and I'd do all the things we didn't / (Ooh-ooh) 'cause I choose you / Yeah, I choose you / We put men on the moon / But I can't figure out what is missin' / And in every room / You're right in front of me / We find pictures in stars / But they're thousands of miles away (away), oh / And I'll give you my all / But you take, and you take, and you take / It's only war if there's a winner / (Ooh-ooh) It's only hell if there's a sinner / (Ooh-ooh) and I'd do all the things we didn't / (Ooh-ooh) 'cause I choose you / Yeah, I choose you / I do / I'm not the same as I was before / I'll go through the walls and kick down doors / No, I'm not the same as I was before / And I wouldn't hurt you anymore.”
Eighteen – The Color Violet by Tory Lanez – “Oh, face in the daylight, wastin' time on the stars in the sky / She's got my pager, play games of love all on my eyes / Then I'm reminded, love don't come 'til you find it / I just hope that it's workin', I'm yearnin', I'm searchin', uh / The afterparty was on Wilson and 73rd / You got the notion that somebody else was with me first / But on my radar, you had some nerve to play hard / You took away my chance, but playboys we don't dance, dance, dance / I gave my heart (uh) / Speedin' car goin' ninety in the rain / She took my heart, filled it with nothin' but pain / This beat in my hands is not for romance / I wanna stay but, playboys, we don't dance, dance, dance.”
Nineteen – Lost Again by VICTORS – “Her dark eyes staring back at me / Haunting me, my mind / Won't you teach me how to be like you? / So effortlessly cool yet so shy / I'm lost again / Can't go on without you / Cause I'm lost again / Can't go on without you.”
Twenty – Miles Ahead by The Strike – “Time / Time stands still / And I'm in over my head cause I / I've heard looks can kill / I'm wondering how I'm not dead / Cause one look from you could turn me right to stone / One look could cut me deeper than I've ever known / You know that I can never look back / You're the freeway queen / Running reds like green / I'm that teenage kid, running things back in my head / Life's your stage and scene, your script's so obscene / I play, I forget / When you say things you've said / Acting like your life, it won't end / Yet each night is the last again / I keep running, but forever you're miles ahead / Love / We found love / Will we lose it like everyone does? / I'm feeling too high up / I see you're loving this rush / A one time killer can't get enough / You draw blood and you paint with a dark brush / You're the one / And I can never look back.”
